Research Description
Project 1: Therapeutic success in depression is limited and a typical trial of antidepressant is usually associated with low remission rates. More efficient and more customized treatments are urgently needed. In the last 20 years, a robust body of evidence confirmed the rapid antidepressant effects of ketamine, however, it is not clear which participants will respond robustly or poorly to ketamine. We are conducting a systematic a meta-analysis assessing predictors of response to ketamine and esketamine.
Project 2: Preclinical research is vital to improve the understanding of the physiopathology of depression but it is surrounded by misconceptions regarding its strengths and limitations. A common misconception is the existence of animal models of depression since depression in humans is very unique and heterogeneous disorder that cannot to be fully replicated in other species. We are conducting a meta-analysis that aims to critically examine current animals used to study depression and their reliance on stress paradigms.
Future Interests
For my professional future I endeavor to achieve an academic career where I will be able to combine high-quality and high-impact research, and clinical practice. My goal is to become a thoughtful and innovative leader in depression research. The ultimate goal of my research is to develop predictive models (using demographics, clinical variables, serum biomarkers, neuroimaging) to better predict the patients that will develop depression and the best treatment for specific individuals in the context of precision psychiatry.
